The Madman stands at the crossroads. He is beating a hand drum, saying, ‘Rama, Rama! Your act! Your act! Your act is running well.’ A crowd gathers. There is no break in
the madman’s dance. ‘Your act goes on splendidly.’ A wise man from among the spectators,
asks, ‘What is the matter, madcap’?
Madman : Your act! Your act is going on.
Man : Where is this show going on?
Madman : Rama, Rama. That sky is You, this air is You, that Sun
is You, the water is You, the earth is You, the Ganga is You, the pond is You, the ocean
is You. Your act goes on splendidly. Rama, Rama, Sitaram.
The man, the cow, the goat, the cat, the ant, the mosquito, the bug and the louse, all are
You.
The sadhu is You, the dishonest man is You, the thief is You, the dacoit is You,
the minister is You, the soldier is You, the contemplating conqueror of the senses is You
and even that dissolute person smoking a bidi and whirling a walking stick is
You. The chaste woman devoted to her husband is You, the lustful, luxurious prostitute
engaged with the husbands of other women, is also You. The boy, the old man, the young
man, the young woman, the Brahmin and the others are all You. That one-eyed man with a
stick in his hand is You. That leper crying at the street side is You. Your act goes on
splendidly. Rama, Rama.
(The mad man sounds the damaru and begins to dance).
Man : Go on.
Madman : The bullock cart is You, the bullock is You, the driver is You,
the motor-car and its driver are You, the railway carriage, the lines, the guard, the
driver; all are You. The Vedas, the Vedanta, the Tantra, the
mantras, poetry, drama and the novel; all are You. Life is You and death is You.
You are the bone, marrow, flesh, fat, blood, hands, feet, mouth, nose, ears and the eyes.
You are the entrails, brain, heart and whatever belongs to the body. Sin, religion and
irreligion are You. Your act goes on splendidly. Ahead, behind, right, left, high, low;
all are You. Your act goes on splendidly. You are the Muladhara,
Swadhisthana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddha,
Ajna and Sahasrara. You are the Ida, Pingala,
Sushumna and the seventy two crores seventy two lakh ten thousand two hundred and
one nadis. The seven notes are You. The twenty-two Shrutis are You. The
six ragas and the thirty-six raginis are You. One crore thousand
Nada are You. A hundred crore lights are You. The past, the future and the
present are You. Rama! Rama! Rama!
Your act goes on splendidly. You are Indra, the Moon, Vayu, Varuna, the
planets and the stars. The earth is You and the land of Bharata is You. The
Vindhyas, Himalayas, Tibet, Nepal, Kanya Kumarika and the Malay mountains are You. Arabia,
Tartar, Africa, England, America, Russia, China, Japan, the Andamans and all the islands
are You. The seven continents, the seven Varshas, the seven seas,
Bhuvah, Swah, Mahah, Janah, Tapah,
Satya; all are You. The seven rivers, the seven mountains, the seven islands, the
seven forests, the the seven lokas are You. Atala, Vitala,
Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala and
Patala; the seven lower worlds are You. Andhatamissa,
Maharourava, Rourava, Ambarisha, Mahakasha and
Avichi are You. The waters, ten times in expanse and surrounding these fourteen
worlds, are You. The Fire surrounding the waters is You. The air surrounding the Fire, the
sky surrounding the Air, the Ether surrounding the Air are You. The ‘I’, ten times greater
and surrounding the Ether are You. Mahat element, surrounding the ‘I’ and ten
times greater in size, is You. Prakriti, ten times larger than the
Mahat element and surrounding it, is You. This universe is You. Ananta holding
the universe on his head is You. The Mahakurma under Ananta and on the
head of Adhara Shakti is You. You are the innumerable universes. Everything
above, below, before, behind and on the sides of these universes is You. There is nothing
in this grand act that is not you. Rama, Rama. Your act goes on splendidly.
(The madman begins to dance again, sounds the damaru).
Man : And what about yourself?
Madman : Sitaram. This you is such an insignificant part of You!
It is only an atom from the quarter part of the manifestation. Still there are You; in the
three padas above, immortal and full of light. Light and nectar flowing from
there sustain this act. Rama, Rama. Your act goes on splendidly! The eternal
Kailash above the universe is You. Seated there, the three-eyed, five-headed Sadashiva
playing the damaru is You. The shining and cheerful Mother is You. Kartika,
Ganesha, Lakshmi and Saraswati are You. Nandi, Bhringi, ghosts, spirits, peacocks, lions,
rats, snakes, bulls and the wood-apple tree are You.
Golok is You. Nanda, Yashoda, Rohini, Sridama, Sudama, Dama and Vasudama are You. The
female friends, Lalita, Vishaka and others are You. Radharani, full of pique, is You.
Muralimanohara is You. The flute is You. The song of the flute is You. The
kadamb tree and the bank of the Jamuna are You. Rama, Rama. Your act
goes on splendidly.
Eternal Ayodhya is You and Dasharatha is You. Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, Sumitra, Bharata,
Lakshmana and Shatrughna are You. Nala, Nila, Gaya, Gavaksha, Gandhamadana, Jamavanta,
Sugriva and Hanuman are You. You are Rama armed with the bow; You are the merciful mother
Janaki. Rama, Rama. Your act goes on splendidly.
You are Vaikuntha. You are the five hundred nymphs wearing heavenly garlands, collyrium,
scent and clothes. You are the heavenly goddesses. You are Sunanda, Nandakumuda, Garuda,
Sudarshan and Viswaksena. You are the bejewelled canopy with a thousand columns built of
great jewels. Seated there, Vimala and seven others with the eight-petalled lotus, are
You. Above that, You are the Purushottamottama, wearing yellow clothes, holding
the conch, wheel and the mace; cheerful faced, having beautiful eyes, smiling and
dark-hued. You are the joyful Mother on the left. You are dispersed in joy and light.
Rama! Rama! Your act goes on splendidly. Rama, Rama.
The madman started dancing while playing the damaru and singing, ‘Your act goes
on splendidly.’ Nobody could stop his dance.
